In the face of the many and varied dangers of everyday life, whether they arise from accidents at home, at work or in natural environments, basic first aid training has expanded and become more structured in France.
It currently operates through:
- Life-Saving Skills Training (G.Q.S.) for ages 10 and up
- Complete First Aid Training for Citizens (P.S.C.), open to everyone.
- Mandatory company training through Workplace First Aiders (S.S.T.)
- More advanced training for medical professionals
Team
First
Aid (PSE 1 & 2).
It enables everyone to put into practice:
- Accident prevention in everyday situations, which involves being aware of the most common risks and taking appropriate protective measures in the event of an accident, using the resources available if necessary. It means knowing how to provide assistance without putting yourself in danger, and identifying risks that could make the situation worse or result in further casualties,
- Basic first aid actions to take before professional responders arrive. In some emergencies, every minute counts to save a life. Anyone, including a child, can perform certain actions easily and quickly.
- Raise the alarm or ask someone to do so. This means recognising the visible signs of a life-threatening emergency and relaying them so that appropriate emergency services can be dispatched quickly. It also means seeking medical advice if necessary and following the recommendations of the emergency services.

OUR TRAINING COURSES
What is GQS training?
The GQS course teaches participants how to respond to life-threatening emergencies. By the end of the course, participants will be able to act quickly and effectively while waiting for professional emergency services to arrive and recognize emergency situations. They will learn basic first aid skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, controlling severe bleeding, and calling emergency services.
How is the Life-Saving Skills training course delivered?
The Life-Saving Skills course consists of two hours alternating between theory and practical sessions. Groups are limited to 15 people per session to ensure better supervision. Under the guidance of an experienced instructor, participants will be coached in the techniques and use of equipment such as defibrillators to ensure they are confident using them. There is no exam or assessment to pass this course.
Who can take GQS training?
The only requirement for taking a GQS course is that you are at least 10 years old. Otherwise, it is open to everyone without distinction. However, it is recommended for parents, teachers, association leaders, and anyone who works with children or older adults, or is responsible for people with disabilities.
These are the people most vulnerable in an emergency: illness, injury, accident…

What is Citizen First Aid?
Basic first aid training. These initials stand for Prévention et secours civiques de niveau 1. The course aims to teach as many people as possible the basics of first aid. It has replaced the AFPS since August 1, 2007.
No special knowledge is required. For ages 10 and up.
It lasts 7 hours (excluding meals and breaks), but may vary slightly depending on the instructors and the associations.
This is a practical course, during which there is no need to take notes. The course is entirely based on learning practical skills and carrying out realistic scenarios (generally called “practical scenarios”) in which the instructors simulate accidents.
With regular refresher courses (not compulsory), this training is sufficient to respond to most emergency situations.
This course is for anyone who wants to learn the basics of first aid without necessarily intending to become a first responder. Those who do should consider taking the PSE1 course instead.

Who is an occupational first aider? By completing occupational first aid training (SST), an employee becomes an occupational first aider. They are a member of staff qualified to provide first aid. The certification they receive after training proves that they are qualified to provide first aid to save someone who has suffered an accident at work, and to help prevent hazardous situations in the workplace.
When is workplace first aid training mandatory? SST training is a regulatory requirement for businesses and construction sites where work is considered hazardous. The Labour Code requires employers to put prevention and emergency response measures in place within the company. Your employer must ensure the physical and mental health and safety of employees, organize emergency response and provide trained first aid personnel. The Workplace First Aider (SST) is one link in the chain.
This is an employee who carries out their role alongside their regular job. To be recognised as a workplace first aider (SST), they must earn the SST training certificate. This is a 14-hour course covering first-aid skills and how to respond to an accident or medical emergency. However, SST training is more than just a first-aid course. Workplace first aiders also have a less well-known second role: preventing occupational risks. To become certified, they must develop skills in both first aid and prevention. What are these skills, and how can they be certified? Find out.
